Fremont High School Baker Potato Rundraiser
These are 50lb bags of Russets (the big Idaho "bakers"). These are the most popular type. They are light brown skin, white potatoes that are typically best for baked potatoes, mashed potatoes and in soups/casseroles.
Freshly dug and will still have some dirt on them in the bags (leave the dirt on, they will stay fresh longer. If you remove them all from the bag and wash them before storing them, they will go bad faster). Store potatoes in cold storage, basements, anywhere that is shaded/dark and cool is best. Many leave in the bag, but many like to open and go thru the bag to make sure to eliminate any potatoes that may have been nicked or sliced with machinery - and weed those out so they don't seep and spoil the ones around them. Can be placed back in the bag or some like to put in laundry baskets or open boxes.
Because they are so fresh, they are GOOD until spring (even summer). They will last longer if in cold storage, cold basement, etc. It's very common that grocery store potatoes are from a potato cellar from the harvest the year previous. By Spring and Summer you'll start getting shoots on the potatoes. This doesn't mean they are bad, they are just searching for sunshine to continue to sprout leaves and grow more.
The bags may be picked up at Fremont High School around the back entrance (south side near the portables).
