Foreign Maternal, an original piece was inspired by my client's idea. My client gave me a range of freedoms for this project, but all they requested was that I make something original that expresses my attitude towards them. An artist whose art fascinated me was the contemporary artist Kees van Dongen, who utilizes symbolism and illustrates all kinds of characters with acrylic paint. Vincent van Gogh’s self portrait is another example I took inspiration upon, leaning towards the path of post-impressionism which also uses symbolism along with emotional and dynamic abstract techniques.
To animate this painting, I used a cool palette on the characters and background sky. There are some contrasting elements like a beam of warm light shining down, and the painted grass. Overall, the piece metaphorically represents nurture, and maternal care despite uncertain circumstances and differences.
All purchased artwork should be picked up and taken home from the reception on April 23rd 4-6pm at North Gwinnett High school in the CLC.
